sonaroids.app
A downloadable game for Android
Games you play with your palm in mid-air. You never touch the screen. Your phone plays an ultrasound tone you can't hear, listens to the echo off your hand and works out how far your palm is. That distance is the height of your ship or your car. No camera, no extra hardware.
TWO THINGS YOU WON'T FIND ELSEWHERE
Sonar control: your palm in mid-air instead of buttons.
Skin playlist: pick the worlds you like and they change right in the middle of the game, one after another or at random, every 15 seconds to 2 minutes.
TWO GAMES
SonaFly is a space shooter. Your ship fires on its own, you only choose where it flies. Split rocks, dodge saucers, grab power-ups, and stay near the middle of the screen for more points. Six worlds: space, fairy tale, vector 80s, neon, notebook and retro LCD, each with its own ship, saucers, shots and explosions.
SonaRace is a race along a winding road. Your car drives itself and keeps speeding up, your palm steers it. Pick up fuel, collect coins, pass other cars and don't run dry. Three worlds: the candy land, the notebook and a pirate river.
Every world comes in HD or in pixels.
HOW TO PLAY
On a table: lay the phone down sideways and move your palm up and down 5-10 cm beside it.
In your hand: hold the phone in one hand and move the other palm 5-15 cm from the end with the charging port.
Set media volume to 20-30% (40-60% on iPhone), allow the microphone and take your hand away for a second. Then wave, and the game fits itself to your range.
WHICH PHONE
iPhone: works great. Open sonaroids.app in Safari and add it to the Home Screen.
Android: download the app below. It picks the best microphone and sets the volume by itself. How well it works depends on the phone's speaker and mic. Some hear your hand perfectly, a few barely at all.
Free, no ads. Online high scores for both games, and the server replays every game to check the score.
